Bouquet for Basho

This was the second film I made, in 2010. When I came across haikus of Matsuo Basho, a 17th century Japanese poet, I was intrigued and awed at his ability to build an entire landscape in just a few terse words. I knew I had to channel that awe I felt into a medium that, while different from writing, still conveyed that sense of silent joyous introspection.

I picked ten of his haikus from the book ‘Narrow Road to the Interior’ and made a seven-minute-long short film. It was the official selection of 2011 film festivals in Thailand, Cambodia and Ohio.
